Most bedroom lighting is reviewed while standing beneath it. The room is used horizontally. From the pillow, an exposed lamp, a misplaced switch or a bright ceiling slot becomes impossible to ignore.

Start with the body

Confirm the bed frame, mattress and pillow height before fixing any wall light. Sit and lie down in a taped full-scale setup. This bodily test is similar to choosing a sofa through posture: catalogue dimensions only become meaningful when related to an actual position.

A reading beam should reach the page without crossing the other pillow. If a fitting depends on a narrow angle, test it before ordering. Warm-white paint will also change under a concentrated bedside lamp, so complete the room-by-room paint test with the intended source switched on.

Put control within reach

Each sleeper should be able to switch off the reading and general light without lifting a shoulder from the mattress. Provide a clear charging position that does not trail cables across a drawer. Where cooling grilles sit above the bed, coordinate them using the access and airflow checks in designing around air-conditioning.

Keep the wall composition quiet

Headboard, socket, switch and lamp centres should read as one elevation. The principles in The Final Ten Percent Is Mostly Alignment are especially visible beside a bed because the view is repeated every day.

Do not add a fitting merely to complete a pair. As symmetry and balance are not identical, two bedside conditions can be different while the room remains settled.
